The always-extravagant creative director for Dior has been suspended from the label today. As we all know, Paris Fashion Week kicks off in a few days and most designers are already in France getting prepared for the shows. Last night Galliano was at La Perle, a French restaurant, when he got into a confrontation with a French couple. There was an exchange of words and physical violence until allegedly, Galliano uttered anti-semitic slurs at the couple. Since anti-semitism is illegal in France (and can land the accused up to 6 months in prison), he was arrested and taken into custody. Although he was later released, the CEO of Dior announced his suspension only a few short hours after the altercation took place.
I highly doubt that Dior will abstain from presenting their collection during Paris Fashion Week this year although it would feel odd without the presence of the creative director. This is a very unfortunate situation, seeing as Galliano is one of the greatest designers of his time and has done a lot of good for the brand. But the bottom line is, racism cannot be tolerated, no matter who it comes from. Many doubt that he will return to Dior after this.
